On December 1, 2022, The British Film Institute and Sight & Sound magazine released their list of the greatest films of all time, a project that has been running since 1952, when "The Bicycle Thieves" won the first poll. "Citizen Kane" would win the next five in a row, supplanted by "Vertigo" in 2012. This year, the canon shifted with more critics being asked to participate than ever, including this site's Brian Tallerico, Robert Daniels, Matt Zoller Seitz, Odie Henderson, Tomris Laffly, and Marya E. Gates.
Chantal Akerman's "Jeanne Dielman 23, quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles" topped the list for the first time. ("Vertigo" fell to two and "Citizen Kane" to three.) We thought we'd collect all of the reviews written at this site for films in the top 100, and each review has a widget at the top so you can see where the film is available to watch. Sadly, Roger never reviewed Akerman's film, and so it's one of the missing, but roughly 3/4s of the films on the top 100 are here, many of them films that Roger dubbed Great Movies.
